High in the trans-Himalayan region of Lahaul, where the wind howls like an ancient song and the sky feels just within reach, stands Yunam Peak (6111m) — a semi-technical giant nestled near the Indo-Tibetan border. For trekkers and aspiring mountaineers, Yunam offers the perfect bridge between trekking trails and high-altitude mountaineering. This is a story of grit, altitude, connection, and raw Himalayan beauty.
Why Yunam?
Yunam Peak is often chosen as a first 6000er. Why? Because it’s wild, remote, and offers the thrill of altitude without the heavy technical demands of ropes or ice climbing. But don’t let that fool you — Yunam tests your endurance, mental strength, and willpower in every step.
With panoramic views of CB ranges, Baralacha La, and on a clear day, peaks from Zanskar and Ladakh, Yunam rewards every struggle with breathtaking sights and soul-stirring silence.
The Route
Our expedition began in Manali, the adventure capital of Himachal. After equipment checks and a brief orientation, we drove through the iconic Atal Tunnel towards Keylong, our first acclimatization stop. A night here helps the body adjust, while also offering a glimpse of Lahaul’s unique Buddhist culture.
From Keylong, we moved towards Bharatpur, a high-altitude plateau beyond Baralacha La. Imagine setting up camp beside patches of snow, grazing yaks, and glacial winds brushing your face. It’s cold, it’s barren, and it’s beautiful.
The real adventure began as we hiked to Yunam Base Camp (5200m). The air was thinner, the body slower. Every step was deliberate. We spent a night here, hydrating, stretching, and mentally preparing for the final push.
Summit Day: Into the Thin Air
We started our summit push around 3 AM — headlamps slicing through the darkness, our breath visible in the frigid air. The terrain was scree and moraine, with the final section requiring microspikes or crampons, especially if icy. The ascent, although gradual, felt eternal.
But then — the summit.
Standing at 6111 meters, with prayer flags fluttering against the vast emptiness, was surreal. The sun rose, painting peaks in gold, and the wind carried nothing but silence. We hugged, cried, clicked pictures, and simply stood still in awe.
Challenges Along the Way
High altitude spares no one. From mild AMS symptoms to freezing winds and sleepless nights, Yunam throws curveballs. Hydration, nutrition, and proper acclimatization were key to keeping the team safe and strong.
Weather is also unpredictable. A whiteout can turn you back just meters from the summit. Respect for the mountains is non-negotiable.
Why This Expedition Mattered
Every mountain teaches something new. Yunam taught us patience, teamwork, and how important it is to be present in the moment. It wasn’t just about reaching the summit — it was about the journey, the bonds formed, and the strength discovered within.
For many in our team, this was their first 6000m experience — a bold leap into the world of high-altitude expeditions. For others, it was a spiritual homecoming.
Final Thoughts
If you’re an experienced trekker looking to push your limits, Yunam Peak is calling. It’s not just a climb — it’s a transformational experience. Remote, raw, and real.
Join us on our next Yunam adventure. We climb with intention, with safety, and with soul.
